Chapter Twelve

Mark

“Let me get this straight.” I clasp my hands on top of my desk. “You want me to tell your ex-boyfriend, who you allowed inside your apartment and who you’re letting sleep on your couch right now, to give you some space?”

“He’s your best friend,” Natalie reminds me. “And I’m not exactly talking about physical space. I just want him to ease up on the pressure, to stop being so demanding, to slow down just enough that maybe he’ll be able to see things clearly, to see reason.”

She paces the room.

I tap my fingers on the wood. “And you can’t tell him that because…?”

“Because he won’t listen to me.” She sits on a chair and grips her hair in frustration. “God, I never knew he was so stubborn.”

“Maybe you rubbed off on him,” I suggest.

Natalie narrows her eyes at me. “You find this amusing, do you?”

Just a bit. I find it more surprising, actually. My departure from the restaurant last night was a resignation. I threw in the towel and told myself that I was going to stay away from them, just as I did four years ago. And I thought it was going to unfold the same way. I’d bury myself in work. They’d be happy, and maybe this time they’d last forever. Yet, just this morning, Natalie barges into my office, restless and seething in frustration.

“This is all your fault, you know,” she tells me.

“My fault?”

“You left us alone. Why would you do that?”

“I—”

“It doesn’t matter.” She’s off the seat again. “You left us, and somehow he started getting all these crazy ideas. Or wait, maybe you planted them in his head before you left.”

I exhale. “What exactly are these crazy ideas that you’re accusing me of planting?”

“Him bringing me to Thailand.” She starts pacing anew. “Oh, wait. No. It’s Singapore and then all of Asia. Southeast Asia. Whatever.”

Kevin told her that? Wasn’t he supposed to win her back first before springing all this on her?

“I haven’t even told him that I want us to get back together. I’m still thinking about that. Now he wants me to move with him? Wait. That’s not even the weirdest part. He wants me to marry him and then move with him and basically be this housewife who washes his clothes and cooks for him, except we won’t have a house because we’ll be traveling from place to place.”

I lift my eyebrows. “He proposed?”

“Yes.”

Kevin didn’t tell me about that.

“Or no. Well, he didn’t go down on one knee and asked me to marry him. He just said something like it would be nice for us to get married, like we never broke up.” She sits down and clasps her hand to her forehead. “Oh, God. He hasn’t changed, has he? He’s back to barking orders at me like I’m one of his nurses, deciding what’s best for me like I’m one of his patients.”

I say nothing because she sounds like she’s talking more to herself. I just lean back in my chair and listen.
